You’ve probably heard the saying, “Don’t burn your bridges.” Unfortunately, not many people take that old saying to heart. When we’re wronged by another person, our natural and first instinct is to lash out and inflict twice as much pain as we received. In everyday life, this may not be such a detrimental thing to do, but in the Internet marketing community, this could be the kiss of death. Why? Well, to understand why you have to understand the Internet marketing community itself.
Have you ever noticed that when you get an ad in your email that when you go to the site, 9 times out of 1o, it is either a site you have seen before or it’s a site that has been put together by a name that you recognize? There is a reason for this.
The Internet marketing community is a small one.
Oh, I know you’ve been told about all the millions of people on the Internet and the many millions more that are on the way, but the cold hard reality of it is that many of these people are never going to have any interest in earning a living on the Internet. The numbers the gurus throw at you are just to get you excited about all the prospects that are out there for your goods and services. If only it was true.
I subscribe to a leads company. Each day, they provide me with about 200 to 300 leads. Now, unlike most people, who think that these are different leads each day, I actually go through them to see just how unique they are. Of course when I first started, all the email addresses were new to me. But as time went on, I began to see the same names over and over. Eventually, I found that there were very few new leads in comparison to the size of my daily leads list.
I found myself asking the question, “Where are all these millions of people? And can’t I even get 2000 unique leads on a daily basis? What’s going on here?”
What’s going on is that the Internet, as far as people looking for make money at home opportunities, is smaller than you realize. Millions of leads per day, you ask? You’d be lucky to get millions of leads in your whole lifetime. Some lead generation services can just about give you a couple of hundred unique leads each day, let alone a couple of thousand.
You’re probably wondering what all this has to do with burning bridges. It has everything to do with burning bridges. See, there are very few bridges in Internet marketing that you can burn before you have burned yourself out of any chance of making it online.
Look at it this way. Let’s say a guru sells you a product that you think is crap. Okay, you have every right to ask for a refund. He probably wouldn’t notice anyway. But what if you were to write him a rather nasty email telling him what you thought of his product? Do you think he’s going to forget who you are? And then what happens when you create your own product and you ask him for a testimonial? Do you think you’re going to get it? Not only won’t you get it, but don’t even think of asking any of his friends. News travels fast, and believe me, all of the big name gurus know each other.
So before you think about the satisfaction you’ll get from telling somebody off, think about the future first. Think about the day when you need help with something and the person who could have helped you the most has put you on his ignore list.
Leave the bridge burning to those who have less to lose.
